Art education has been proven to benefit the mind growth of our children. In order to prepare them for the 21st century, lessons in art education allow the students to explore their creativity while developing their critical thinking skills. They will learn how to face frustration and positive ways to get past it. The children will experience moments where they will need to practice self-control. Unfortunately, art education is disappearing from our schools. My students are missing this very beneficial component of brain development. In second grade, the children are learning how to take turns, view things from other's perspectives, and work with others to achieve a common goal. During any given art lesson, opportunities to strengthen these areas abound! Painting is a whole-brain activity that utilizes both sides of the brain - right side for critical thinking and left side for creativity. Whole-brain learning creates a child-focused on learning with not much mental capacity left for misbehaving!
