A small group of my students do not have computers, nor do they have access to computers near their home. They have to work to support their family, so the library (where most of them would be able to access a computer) is often closed after their work schedule. They attend a large, urban high school in California. They are African American and Latino, and excited about the possibilities for their future. But they are overwhelmed with the many requirements of their senior year, and are dejected when they cannot fulfill requirements (to word-process an essay, for example). They are also worried about their ability to complete college applications without a computer.
