I am working to enhance my "Cozy Corner". This serves as a calm down zone for my students who have intense anxiety and sensory needs at times due to autism. My corner currently has a love seat and a rug and some used books on the floor. I am hoping to have accessible books for my students to read in the Cozy Corner when they feel overwhelmed by the sights, smells, sounds, and social aspects of every day life. In order to learn, they must be first comfortable and at peace mentally. For those who can't read, I hope to have other fidgets and activities readily available on a mobile cart. While I may hold the keys, the classroom belongs to my students; everything in the room is intentionally utilized to encourage my students' success. In a functional special ed classroom, whole-group lessons aren't always realistic. My students will need individualized tasks and activities to help them grow and move toward mastering IEP goals. This requires TONS of differentiated instruction, from number recognition to high school algebra. For this type of instruction, I have created and purchased many file folder with velcro tasks for the kids to attempt and accomplish independently. These hundreds of tasks need storage and organization: drawers and storage, etc. I will also need to communicate with students' parents every day, and therefore, need the materials to do so: binders, notebooks, etc. Please consider helping this first year teacher achieve these goals for her incredible students.
