The only items included in this project are books. Happy books. Sad books. Books about sports. Books about immigrants. Books to make them laugh . Books to make them angry. But ultimately, books to make them T H I N K. I attempted to add all genre areas to pique the interest of even the feistiest self-proclaimed non-reader. The project is especially important because as a language arts teacher, I understand the importance of reading. And not just reading for homework but reading for leisure. This includes reading to comprehend, which is a hard concept for many students time and time again. I want to watch them have the "a-ha!" moment when a book continues to make sense to them or to even discuss it with friends. Reading leisurely has statistically been a defining factor in a student's performance. My students are my children for the 180 days I have them and I want them to not only leave me with a passing score but with a fundamental understanding of the gift reading can be for them.
