Because my students have often been exposed to traumatic experiences throughout their lives, they have a hard time separating from those experiences and getting into a head space that is conducive for learning when they attend school. I want to provide a safe, comfortable classroom that allows my students to detach from the outside world and puts them in the best place, mentally, to effectively learn and grow. By offering a reading corner and flexible seating I am providing students options to learn in a way that fits their needs because we all learn and grow in different ways. People often like to unwind at their favorite coffee shop and read or complete a project and, with your help, I would like to provide that relaxing coffee shop vibe for my students! As you can see from the picture of my classroom, there are no soft materials in the room. The curtains, chair, and area rug will help combat that stark, cold atmosphere and the warm lighting from the floor lamp with allow me to turn off the harsh florescent lighting in the classroom. Throw pillows and bean bag chairs will provide optional floor seating across the area rug and aid in the softening of the room. The binding machine will allow me to create life books for each student where they will goal plan, journal, expand their vocabulary, and self-reflect on their progress in my class. These life books will be laminated and my hope is that my students will continue to use them long after they have completed their time in my classroom.
