Have you ever been in school and just could not take your attention off the project you were working on? Do you remember being so engaged, interested and laser-focused on what was in front of you that nothing else around you mattered? If you do, then I have some good news for you. You now have the opportunity to help me provide this feeling to my students through the use of Project Lead the Way's Innovators and Makers kits. These Innovators and Makers kits will turn students into computer scientists Micro:bit by Micro:bit, and it is only possible with your help. This summer I attended a professional with Project Lead the Way that provided me with an innovative curriculum that incorporates Science, Art, Math, and programming to help students create projects that will solve real-world problems. Students use Micro:bits and an online program to write their own algorithms to control outputs on their Micro:bit. The Micro:bit is a piece of ARM-based embedded piece of hardware that can be programmed to receive different inputs and to send out different outputs. This means students can program the Micro:bit to flash the output string "Hello Donor, please donate to Ms. Ly's project" by pressing the input 'button A' on the Micro:bit! In the past. my students have not been afforded the opportunity to see their programming produce anything physical in the real world. Students were able to code on online platforms that had feedback on their computers, but we have never been able to have physical programming kits like the Innovators and Makers kits from Project Lead the Way. Using these kits, students will get to integrate knowledge from Science about circuits, calculations from Math and logic and reasoning to have their Micro: bit perform the desired action, learning as they go.
