The children will be allowed to try and choose their own seating throughout the day. These options provide opportunities to be able to move throughout the room. The different type of chair options, such as the balance ball, can help children expend energy while staying in one place. They will be able to bounce their feet using the chair bands, which will also help with movement. With less time for recess in schools, alternative seating provides a way to release energy in the classroom which in turn helps students to focus, participate, and feel less restless. Flexible seating is research based. It improves circulation, balance, and posture and helps children use energy in a way that is conducive to learning. It increases motivation and engagement and decreases behavior issues. Physical activity has also been linked to increased academic learning. Additionally, the classic board games can be used for centers. I plan on modifying the games so students can practice sight words and math facts while using healthy competition to motivate and keep students engaged.
