Do you recall what your 4th grade math class looked like? If you're envisioning a teacher standing at the chalkboard repeatedly modeling how to solve basic computation problems by stating the "rules", you might have been in my class. We weren't provided very many opportunities to explore math through hands-on activities and manipulatives; therefore, for many of us our understanding of math is limited to recalling the how (the rules) not a deeper understanding of the why. Today's research indicates that students need to conceptualize math to truly understand it. This is best accomplished through the use of manipulatives and exploration. A concrete understanding of place value is the base upon which all number sense is built. With your help, I will be able to provide each of my students with manipulatives and activities that ensure their understanding of place value which will increase their confidence in math.
