The materials I've chosen will enhance my school's Social Studies curriculum. In the past, Social Studies has only been taught through reading and writing. Research shows that separating Social Studies actually increases literacy skills when it is taught explicitly for at least 45 minutes a day. I am passionate about giving my students - who are largely English language learners - the knowledge they need to live in the United States. Social Studies are life skills. Students will take what they learn in history, government, and economics to become educated voters, consumers, and business owners. With my materials, students will be given access to an array of books, both fiction and nonfiction; manipulatives, and virtual field trips. My school is suffering from the lack of resources and my students deserve them!
