My students struggle with all forms of reading. Upfront Magazine is a biweekly magazine of current events, with structured reading skills. This online option allows me to modify reading levels to meet the needs of both advanced and struggling readers. The magazine also helps build vocabulary and writing skills. All activities align with state standards. I plan to use this for weekly column writing exercises and reading comprehension exercises designed to increase their ACT scores, so they can earn the financial help they need for college. I had two students who just graduated who both had 3.0+ GPAs, but neither scored above a 16 on the ACT. One is hoping to get a job at a local hotel. One is taking two semesters of remedial class before he can start his actual degree. How is that fair?
