My students love to read! They love seeing themselves in the pages of books and connecting with others' experiences. According to Rudine Sims Bishop, books are mirrors, windows, and sliding doors for our students. They can reveal the experiences of others, reflect our own experiences, and slip us into those worlds with our imaginations. Recently, my students have expressed that they cannot find a book in our library that interests them. After a deeper look, I realized that my students need more books where they feel represented. I'm a first-year teacher aiming to fill my classroom library with culturally responsive chapter books that will support my students' learning, their love for reading, and promote tolerance for among students. I want my students to see themselves in the books they read, the diverse world around them, and the worlds that can be created in their imagination. I have requested books that will help provide "windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors" for my students, as well as offer high-interest and age-appropriate literature. I have also chosen books that will support my students who have a far above grade reading level and those that have a below grade reading level. I am especially excited to provide my students with books that they have expressed enthusiastic interest in reading! Obtaining these books will help me create a classroom culture that celebrates diversity and tolerance while promoting a lifelong love for reading.
