Often, students of color do not see themselves reflected in the literature they study. I would like to change this for my students. We are writing memoirs in our class and challenging ourselves with book clubs. I would like for my Latinx students to have a memoir that reflects the experiences in their communities. Students will work in small groups to complete a book club project on several titles of memoirs that reflect many diverse communities. They will use the texts as models for writing their own memoirs and for exploring the themes of establishing an identity, rites of passage in growing up, and enacting social justice. Additionally, students will be able to build empathy for the different experiences of many different groups of people; ultimately drawing connections to their own lives.
