Preschool students learn best when they are allowed to actively use their senses to explore, investigate, create and discover in their environment. Sensory play includes activities which stimulate a preschoolers' senses: sight, smell, taste, hearing, movement, balance, and touch. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, social interaction and problem solving skills. Many preschool students have difficulty processing sensory information. Allowing students to explore sensory activities at their own comfort level helps them develop a trust and understanding of their environment. Having a variety of sensory materials available in the classroom setting gives students a chance to engage in experiences they may not have the opportunity to experience outside of the classroom setting.
