Fulfilling this project will help our counselors improve crisis response and de-escalate agitated or emotionally hijacked students quickly and more effectively so that not only they may be more successful when they return to their classrooms, but their peers as well. Specifically, we will use the yoga mats for student meditation and for small group counseling. The weighted lap pads will be useful when students feel overstimulated. We're asking for three to accommodate the range of ages and body sizes in our building. We're also asking for the weighted heart pillow so that students can hold onto it for a stronger sense of security when needed. The reversible sequin fabric will be used as a sensory tool and cover part of the wall in our calm corner. The 5 minute timer will be an excellent visual for our students in the calm corner, so they can use their time effectively. The kinetic sand, playdoh, and sensory fidget toys are also for the calm corner. The handcart with wheels will be very helpful to our counselors as they transport tools to our second campus. "Mad Dragon" will be a group counseling tool. The animal hand puppets will make role-playing scenarios fun and inviting. The bouncy band will be helpful to students struggling with hyperactivity. The multicultural art supplies promote a sense of belonging for all students. The thought spot will always be displayed and help students manage their feelings. Finally, all of the books that are requested will add to the counselor library and have been reviewed by our counselors, many of which are written by Julia Cook, an author our counselors really enjoy incorporating into individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom lessons.
