This year, I will begin teaching an adult transition class. This class is for students with special needs. This class focuses on social, life and work skills. Several of my students are paraplegic. I want to do my best to ensure that all my students are comfortable. Currently, our classroom has yoga balls and rocking chairs for flexible seating choices. These choices are not always suitable for students with weaker leg muscles. In the book "Ghost Boy" by Martin Pistorius, the author, a paraplegic that is also nonverbal, describes how he enjoyed when his caretakers placed him in a beanbag chair however, at the time he had no way of letting this be known. It is my hope that my students will find the same comfort in this chair. After providing this flexible seating for my students, I will be introducing a weekly book club activity. I want my students to continue developing a love of reading. These students are at varying levels of reading, typically ranging from a preschool to third grade level. Because they are now adults, I have decided to hold a weekly book club. We will choose a book to read and discuss the topic, the style of writing, and whether the book was enjoyable, informative, boring, etc. These books will range from shorter picture books with relevant topics to chapter books. The only problem is, my new classroom has no books! I have purchased a few books to get our school year started and it is my goal to create a classroom library. I thank you in advance for any support provided.
