After completing a short four weeks of summer school with some of the most brilliant and inspiration rising fourth graders I got to ask them for one big favor. I asked for their feedback (so their voices could be heard, too!) for my future third grader's classroom. "If you could have 1-2 things in your classroom that you either did or did not have in third grade what would it be and why?" My energetic kiddos unanimously decided on flexible seating. We had the opportunity to learn in a classroom this summer that had 4 wobble chairs. For some these are an incentive, but more importantly to some these have become an aide in their learning. Not all students can sit still and attentive through 7 hours of instruction a day and their minds begin to wander or their hands and feet begin to fidget. That's where flexible seating comes in! Flexible seating can include stools, bouncy balls with feet for stability, wobble chairs, or even fidget bands for their chair bases so students can be active listeners and learners while also challenging their brains to stay balanced and focused! My students fell in LOVE with their options in our classroom and I am hopeful that the options they picked out will help my 3rd graders too! In addition to flexible seating charts they helped me come up with a few group learning activities and materials that are still budget friendly for our class. ERASE BOARD COVERS! Rather than using bulky and expensive boards we found that sheet covers are an effective method too! My savvy and intelligent fourth graders only began to tap into the possibilities that my classroom full of wiggly and wonderful third graders could feature, but with your help we can put their thoughts into actions!
