In second grade social studies, students focus on the contributions of significant individuals in their community, state, and nation. We learn about these individuals through a variety of nonfiction materials. My students really love to learn about these historical figures, and they especially love to learn about those figures that are most like them. It is my goal to provide a classroom library that includes books about significant individuals of all backgrounds so that every student in my class has the chance to make a personal connection with one of these significant individuals. These connections inspire and motivate students, and give them the confidence to create big dreams for their own lives. I want to show students that every one of them has the capacity to do anything they want, regardless of their skin color, religion, or financial status. This project is just the start of an exciting and inclusive library that will have a prominent place in my classroom for years to come.
