My kiddos love hands-on art. Our budget is $1 per student per year, and they deserve to have the same opportunities as students at other public schools. One of the best ways to help children absolutely fall in love with art - and awaken their creative thinking - is with printmaking. It starts with a hand print and then moves on from there. This project-based learning adventure incorporates art, science and cultural studies in one awesome-sauce project. Younger students learn about how 19th century Japanese fisherman recorded their catches by smearing wasabi ink on their fish and pushing rice paper down on it to make a print. The kids love it! Older kids love putting on their creative hats and designing original artworks on foam blocks. Once they engrave their foam blocks, they ink it up and make prints. Students learn that famous painters loved experimenting with printmaking. A super cool artist that we're going to talk about this year is Dox Thrash, an African-American print maker who invented his own kind of printmaking. As an expansion on the printmaking lesson, we're even going to do a little science experiment!
