Comfort and choice is what most young adults long for, and this project promotes just that! The materials that I am requesting will enhance my classroom library in my 9-12 Intensive Reading classes. In order to promote successful independent reading for my students, we need fiction and nonfiction books that are interesting to them and provide variety, which engages more reluctant and struggling readers. Kids need a space that invites them to feel at home and read. My classroom has linoleum floors, which do not promote comfort to sit and read a good book. I am requesting various comforts such as high-interest books for struggling and reluctant readers, carpets for them to sit on, and inspirational pillows for additional comfort. The books which I have selected include a variety of high-interest fiction and nonfiction titles. Many of them focus on the at-risk scenarios that so many of my students face: poverty, unsafe living conditions, and mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. Sustained amounts of independent reading during school time promotes reading speed, increased vocabulary and comprehension with the end goal of my students passing the state reading test in order to meet their graduation requirement and walk across that stage at the end of their Senior year.
