The technology I currently have in my classroom is about six years old and will no longer be supported by the school system after January 2020. Given the age of the computers, they barely keep up with the academic demands placed on the students to keep them competitive with their grade-level peers. Many of my students are three to four years below their actual grade level in reading, writing, and language skills. The Chromebooks will allow my students to use word processing and presentation software to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills. The acquisition of a set of Chromebooks will allow me to set up a station for students to engage with the technology on a daily basis in class for a variety of purposes. One use will be conducting research, developing claims to be supported by the research, and articulating them to the class via presentation software in Google Classroom. This activity is in line with the expectations of the common core state standards and the rigors of the Tier I curriculum outlined by the school system. A second use will be to take online quizzes and interval assessments using the online tools to gain the practice and proficiency in skills needed to succeed on the state assessment at the end of the school year. The Chromebooks will allow students to access the structured literacy program used by the school system to target specific literacy skills practice. This individual diversity will tailor learning allowing for more direct academic gains in literacy for each student.
