Although I teach math, the content comes secondary to teaching life skills to my special education learners. The majority of my students work along side a learning disability, an emotional disturbance, and English as their second language. This requires a teacher to get creative! The class prize box was an experiment at first, and then became a booming success in developing good behavior practices for my learners! A weekly "Stellar Student" is allowed to pick a prize for reasons ranging from acts of kindness to tutoring their fellow classmates. At first, students work towards these goals with the sole intention of receiving a prize, however this quickly develops into a positive classroom culture where students build each other up and help each other be successful. I would love to continue this practice as I noticed my student's maturity sky rocketed as well as their ability to communicate at age appropriate levels along side their general education peers. Any contribution you can make will help this practice continue in my wonderful classroom!
