A great classroom library is the key to getting children engaged in rich, meaningful text. In order for anyone to become proficient at anything, they need to practice. The same goes for reading. In order for children to become readers, they need the time and materials to practice the skills we learn in class. Each child in my classroom has a book bag where they keep 10-12 books at all times. These books should be at about their reading level so that they can access the text, but they should also be books that catch their eye and pique their curiosity. Every week, students turn those 10-12 books back into our classroom library and pick out another 10-12 books for their reading bags. In order to keep my students engaged and reading for a sustained period of time, I need to have A LOT of different books at different reading levels. Next year, I am projected to have 30+ students so they need to increase my classroom library is more urgent than ever. My motto is 'get the right book to the right child at the right time' which means making sure there are plenty of fiction and non-fiction options for me to help my students find that book, that subject, that author that will help them fall in love with reading and become life-long readers and learners. By funding our project, you will be putting new, fresh reads into the hands of first graders, which will help them become successful readers.
