All students deserve access to equitable education. In today’s economy, it’s harder than ever to find the funds for supplemental educational materials for special education students. In addition, many of our students’ families can’t afford to help bring these motivating resources into the classroom. Despite poor funding in our country for education, our youth need to be a top priority on the national and local level. Without engaging, relevant, and current curriculum, students with special needs will continue to fall behind their grade level peers. Scholastic Action magazine is specifically designed as a reading intervention program. It is one of the best and most affordable reading intervention programs I have found. It not only provides relevant and current articles, but also integrates the needed accommodations for students with disabilities to access the content. Scholastic provides a 21st century approach to reading, by making all articles accessible online through a student subscription. Using our classroom laptops, students can make annotations, listen to the audio presentation, watch videos, and engage with the content through writing prompts. Students are able to develop their digital literacy in order to gain the necessary skills to close their opportunity gaps and be prepared for their futures. Our classroom is asking for 40 memberships to Scholastic Action Magazine. Every 10 dollar donation gives one student a subscription for the entire school year. This includes monthly hard copies to take home and share with their families!
