My school participates in a program that provides targeted support to struggling students. The goal of the program is to address academic, behavioral and social issues through enrichment classes. Students are able to choose from a list which enrichment class they would like to participate in. I offer an enrichment class of board and card games for eighth-graders. Board games are rich in opportunities for students to learn both academic and social skills. Board games require strategy, critical thinking, and even some teamwork or alliances. Middle schoolers especially get a lot out of board games because it’s an important age to develop critical thinking, logic, and reasoning. These games help students connect the old-school way: through face-to-face interactions and teamwork. The social enrichment that students incur when playing board games cannot be overstated. Board games can teach important social skills such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying the interaction with others. All of these benefits while engaging students in a learning process that is so fun they do not even realize they are learning.
