Gone are the days of students sitting still in perfect rows of desks for most of the day. Research conducted on flexible seating shows that providing a wide range of seating options within the classroom improves the students ability to stay focused while they work. Adding these flexible seating options to my classroom will provide my students with a choice of how and where they will sit and learn during the school day. This choice will offer them many benefits that are far and above just having their choice of seating. They will learn to share classroom supplies and materials - community. They will be able to more easily get into different learning groups - collaboration. They will be more relaxed and comfortable - comfort. They will be able to bounce, wobble, rock, and stretch - movement. They will also want to be able to choose their favorite spot - motivation. The addition of flexible seating into my classroom will have an amazing impact on my students academic achievement, as well as their social emotional development.
