iPads are highly motivating for special needs students. New software programs help students be in charge of their individualized learning levels. As their needs reflect a variety of delays in processing skills, behavioral and social needs, and academic skills, our individual work out of the classroom is critical. Focusing for many of my students can be difficult, especially when they have been told by peers and others that they will never 'get it.' My students love to make choices and are thrilled by even the smallest of successes, which is the beauty of working with iPads. Presently, we have no iPads, so I bring my own computer for us to use together. I have seen the enthusiasm with which my students approach learning in this manner and there is nothing more fulfilling than their joy when they realize that yes, they can and do 'get it!' Engaging software games promote literacy, math and social thinking skills and enable my students to experience success and know they are learning. There are thousands of applications that will help my students with their specific learning needs and styles, both academically and with life skills. This does not replace our work, but enhances our time together. They can get assisted reading, do problem solving, play games, anything you can imagine. Technology is a part of the world, and it must be a part of these wonderful young students' lives, as well.
