The Osmo kit is an amazing center that ALL students can do independently from the very beginning. Osmo is self paced, so there's no need to worry about students getting frustrated when things are too hard. It can be a challenge to find meaningful centers that all of my students can do independently, but Osmo is a great option. Kids have fun and are learning through play, all while freeing me up for a small group with other students. Independence is SO important! Let's face it... kids know how to and love using technology these days. Osmo gives them what they want while still providing meaningful instruction during centers. Center time is typically when teachers teach their small groups. Small groups are key to differentiating instruction so that all kids get what they need to succeed. The Osmo system will allow students to learn and grow with all aspects of reading, from letters and sounds, to blending and reading. One of the great things about Osmo is that there is also a math portion, so it can be used during reading and math centers! I have a friend that has this system in her kindergarten class and her students love it; they are staying engaged and learning, all while having a blast!
