After riffling through my classroom library in order to reorganize this summer, I gave myself some credit for making an effort to incorporate strong, diverse titles. But once they were all laid out in front of me, I quickly realized that it was nowhere near enough. One question came to mind: How can I meet the needs of an academically diverse classroom while also acknowledging, welcoming and incorporating their cultural, racial, and social diversities? One of the best ways is with a diverse classroom library. The problem is, I don't have an endless amount of money to spend on my classroom. I've scrounged cheap books here and there, collected from retiring teachers, and patched together some great MOMENTS in my library, but it is nowhere near enough. Take a look at these statistics about children's books and you'll understand the disparity between what is available and the reality of my classroom: tinyurl.com/y5yllryd Kids need to see themselves in what they are reading. They need to feel that validation, understand that reading is for them, and see literacy as an important key to their future. The bottom line is that literacy is something that can either create a wall or open a window for students. Case and point: tinyurl.com/yymyvtt8 My kids have to become voracious readers. Please help me to provide them a classroom in which that is possible for them.
