Many students have not had the opportunity to enjoy a book with positive characters that are like themselves. Wether it is because of gender, race, socioeconomic level, disability, or mental illness, some student groups are ignored. With my project, my students will have a variety of books that they can identify with that will promote individual as well as class growth. Books can help children not only connect with each other, but they can encourage, empower, and even create empathy. They are powerful and can give a voiceless people a way to find and share their own voice. Moving from 15 years of elementary to my first in 6th grade last year, I realized I am missing books my students need that have powerful characters who resemble their own lives. They also need books that teach empathy towards others who are different (especially students with disabilities, different lifestyles, or cultures). My current classroom library focuses from a literature standpoint. I need book sets that also focus on my students growing emotionally. My first year in 6th grade taught me that difficult conversations become much easier when meaningful, authentic literature is involved. Students make much deeper connections with each other in our community circles when they were able to use characters as a springboard for these conversations. Then they became more vulnerable, and we became a family. They need these books for their own growth and mental health. This project will impact my current class of 60 students (2 blocks) as well as over 600 students over the next 10 years. I can't wait to see how these books will impact their lives.
