Every classroom presents a unique community of learners that varies not only in abilities, but also in learning styles. My role as a teacher is to give scholars the tools with which to cultivate their own gardens of knowledge. In order to foster this, I wish to create a community were my students practice self-awareness and value having a choice in their educational journey. Flexible seating gives scholars a feeling of empowerment by having a degree of choice and control over their direct environment. It allows scholars to be free to make a choice of which seating arrangement is best for their success at that particular time. By giving scholars options I am helping them to learn how to make appropriate choices for themselves. There is no better way to show your support for a student-centered classroom, than helping to create a classroom from a child’s point of view. Children need to move. Many of my scholars become more engaged when they are away from their desks. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, and stand. Flexible seating encourages scholars to find their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive. This also helps reduce the amount of behavior problems that can happen in the classroom and promote optimal student engagement and buy-in!
