We all have senses to help regulate our bodies! The proprioceptive sense refers to the sensory input and feedback that tells us about body position, movement and the sense of where you are in relationship to the space around you. The receptors are located in the muscles, joints, ligaments, and other connective tissue. Without this important system, we would not know where different parts of our body are when not looking at each part. I work with many special education students diagnosed with autism, ADHD, leaning disabilities, ODD, emotional disturbance, PTSD, etc., who demonstrate dysfunction in this area and have difficulty reaching their maximum academic potential! They might demonstrate inattention, fidgeting, explosive and aggressive behaviors, etc. As an OT, I address these students sensory concerns each day! However, things I am missing in my space include giant bean bags and a trapeze bar for swinging and crashing so students can get the highest amount of proprioceptive impact possible in order for their bodies to become regulated so they can better access their education!
