Each semester, Geometry students study surface area of various three-dimensional shapes. In the past, I have been using a set of Polydron blocks that are over 20 years old to help students that struggle with spatial thinking. However, this set is so old that many peices are broken, causing figures to fall to pieces at the slightest touch. While the students find it quite comical for an object to unexpectedly fall apart and crash loudly, this tends to make presenting the lessons somewhat frustrating for me. I would love to allow my students to build different polyhedra on their own using a new full set of Polydron blocks. The blocks would give students a chance to place their hands on an object and move it around in ways that a two-dimesional image just doesn't allow. Using the blocks, students can discover and develop formulas for calculating surface areas. They can use problem-solving skills to build nets of different polyhedra. Even their imaginations can be engaged, given the opportunity to build their own figures.
