As an educator, I am working on a Masters in Reading so that I can better incorporate functional literature and literacy practices across the World Language curriculum. This project would help to start a classroom library containing books by Hispanic authors and exploring Hispanic themes: immigration, cultural identity, language barriers, family expectations and struggles, etc. Reading within the multicultural genre will help my students to think critically about other cultures, respond to cultural struggles, and relate to universal experiences. These books include history, language, culture, the teenage experience, and exposure to great literature. My students read in Spanish in the classroom, but are not yet at the level for reading literature in Spanish. Therefore, this project will allow to cultural learning aspect to flourish (while also supporting English/Language Arts skills!)
