I am transferring to a new school and am looking for help to create my own 1st grade classroom library. My goal is to help my students curiosity by giving them access to a variety of engaging books for all reading levels. When choosing books for my students, I focus on big themes like empathy, kindness, perseverance, and curiosity so my students can connect what their reading to their own world and learn from their favorite characters. In primary grades, picture books are used as windows into a character’s life. I chose books, like “The Invisible Boy”, “Those Shoes”, “Recess Queen”, “Big Red Lollipop”, and “Enemy Pie”, to help students practice empathy and promote kindness within my learning community. Books like “Jabari Jumps” and “Mango, Abuela, and Me“ encourage my students to pair their kindness with perseverance. I also chose longer series books like “Mercy Watson”, “Magic Tree House”, “Fly Gy”, “Katie Woo”, and “Ivy and Bean” with dynamic characters for growing independent readers. My students are naturally curious about the world around them and are constantly asking questions about how things work. Books like “Rosie Revere Engineer”, “The Most Magnificent Thing”, and “Ada Twist Scientist” introduce my students to curious characters who problem solve and persevere through challenges. Nonfiction texts for early readers about Outer Space and Animals (two popular research topics in primary grades) allow them to learn more about their interests. Through integrating Science literature in my primary classroom, my students can both learn from curious characters as well as search nonfiction texts for answers to their
