Many of my students come from very low income families. Most cannot afford the basic school necessities like markers, highlighters, glues sticks, folders and pencils. Without these items, learning will be very dull and uneventful. We will not be able to do close reading and highlight key details without a highlighter, or illustrate our thoughts with detail without colored pencils, or stay organized without folders, or worse yet- write our thoughts successfully on paper without pencils. All these supplies, yes, are very basic but are very necessary for success in today's classroom. Without them, these Baltimore students will continue to struggle to shake the ire portrayed about Baltimore's inner city students.
