In a world dominated by technology, all students sometimes need to excel are some simple materials. As I enter my 19th year of teaching, I am looking for a new way to engage students and foster collaboration in the English Language Arts classroom. In the past, my students have shown great excitement when I use tools such as small whiteboards for group work. However, these whiteboards do not always allow enough writing space or allow all group members to have the ability to write on the board quickly before losing a great thought. A large whiteboard table will allow all group members to show and share thinking while working in book clubs or on pieces of writing. While reading a shared book, students will be able to use the table to jot down ideas. These notes could include questions or insights about the content to share with group members, tracking characters, plot, and theme. Once written on the table, these notes will encourage group discussion about the story. This table will be a great place for students to brainstorm story ideas, list character traits, and/or draft possible plot diagrams or outlines. Students will also benefit by using these tables during a peer writing conference. As students peer edit and conference, the table can be a place to write compliments and suggestions for the author to consider for the revision process. Lastly, student ideas can easily be captured by taking a picture of the table before erasing any ideas. This will cut down on our use of paper and be added to the students’ digital portfolios in their Google drives to be easily accessible for future reference.
