Safety is first and foremost; I teach nothing before I teach being safe in the shop. As much as I can teach proper techniques and protocols, safety requires equipment. Good quality safety glasses are not cheap, and they represent a sizable portion of my very small local budget, though they are a non-negotiable in terms of delivering any content or experiencing real hands on experimentation. I also endeavor to never pass on the cost of anything to my students; I believe that their parents and their neighbors already pay more than they can spare to provide them with the programs I offer. My hope is that if you help me provide this mandatory safety equipment to my students, I can allocate the funds that would generally be spent for this to providing materials for their projects or to keep the machinery they use is good working order. I also do not believe that the quality of the safety equipment should be compromised; there are many inexpensive options when it comes to safety glasses, but in this, you get what you pay for.
