Our school utilizes project based learning as their primary method of instruction. Our double exceptional student (those with special needs and gifted needs) still need background reading support in the form of guided reading instruction. These students range from 3rd to 8th grade and have specific IEP goals related to reading and writing, both of which are addressed within guided reading. Guided reading digs into the process of reading and breaks it into systematic, direct instruction. It allows for literal and inferential comprehension, as well as writing beyond the text for cross-curricular instruction. Guided reading provides a solid base for reading instruction.
