ABCs are the building blocks of learning how to read and write. The most important teaching tip of all is to make ABC learning a fun experience, tapping into a child’s creative, critical and innovative thinking. I want my students to have a love of learning this literacy foundation and untap their creativeness, as they prepare to read and write. My students come to class looking forward to the “Hungry Monster” that will eat the letters as they name them and sound them out, or our “What’s in the Brown Bag Game” where we figure out words by the sound of the first letter and funny clues about what the word is. This has proven to me that making it fun for my scholars helps them enjoy learning their ABCs. Having grown up in poverty on the one extreme and working in the corporate world for 30+ years, with my last position as one of the few African American Vice President of Operations, on the other extreme, I know firsthand what it’s like to be disadvantaged and privileged. I made a choice to use my privilege to make a difference in the life of those who are disadvantaged through teaching in Title I schools.
