Stand Out! Stand Proud! Oftentimes schools focus on students that misbehave and those that always behave appropriately and get good grades slide under the radar. It's these students that we sometimes forget about because we don't have to worry about them. They come to school prepared every day, they listen, they do their work, and somehow they don't get any credit or reward for always doing right. How fair is that? PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) is a system that helps implement and promote positive behavior while rewarding those students that do their part. Students collect "cash" throughout the year by showing positive behavior. Once students collect a certain amount of "cash" they are able to spend it at our PBIS store. There are different levels of prizes that cost different amounts. Once a student earns enough "cash" for the prize of their choice, they can go purchase that item. Items are as little as pens, highlighters, notebooks, etc. to as extravagant as blue tooth speakers and other technology-based items such as grip holders. There are even fun and games items such as playing cards, balls, ping pong sets, sunglasses, fanny packs, etc. Other items include miscellaneous type items like LED lights, fidget sensory toys, charms for shoes, water bottle stickers, hair ties, etc. As you can see there are a wide range of items to hopefully attract our diverse student population. Our hopes/goals with this system are that all students will start to see those that do their part get rewarded and follow suit. In many schools that use PBIS, there are fewer detentions and suspensions, and therefore fewer discipline problems. Usually, this increases their grades as well. By rewarding students with these prizes we hope to create more responsible, caring individuals.
