Our school is a k-8th grade community school and our art program is student centered with student choice. Students tape into their own personal artistic interests by creating projects in their media of choice. We have centers for clay, painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, collage, but our architecture center is furnished with recyclables only. My student artists/architects have been asking for LEGO bricks for years, but our budget is too limited. It would be a huge gift for these students to tap into their creative process through building, problem solving, and group work. My first lesson will be working as a community through building a community. Students will begin with brainstorming what a community needs are as well as their dream community. From there, they will develop sketches and will work as a team to decide what to keep and what to leave out. If the entire community cannot be made with the LEGO bricks provided, we can take pictures of what they create then take it apart and build more. The end product will be made up of a collage of the pictures taken with artist statements describing each community fixture.
