Learning to read, love to read, reading for enjoyment, and especially reading for fun -- that's my goal for my students each and every year! Giving my students a choice in what they read and helping them be successful in finishing these books is always my priority. The more they read, the better they become. The better they become, the more they will want to ....read! And series books do just that! Students become familiar with the characters (almost like making new best friends!) and the setting. They become vested in the characters and comfortable with the story structure of series books. My students become engrossed in a series which makes them want to read more, to find out what happens next! Series books keep kids interested and motivated! For each next book in the series they read, there is familiarity. Students won't need to learn about new characters, new settings, or a new story framework. This proves beneficial for my English language learners, struggling readers, and reluctant readers. The formulaic nature of a series allows readers to control their own pace of unfolding events. Since they are aware of what the outcome will be based on past books in the series, they're able to speed up to see how the conclusion is reached, then move onto the next highly anticipated book in the series! Series books are often fast moving, have lots of action or humor, sometimes suspenseful, and are highly interesting. Many researchers have found that students gain a number of important reading skills while engaging with series books! "Series"-ously, help me get more series books into the hands of my students! I'm sure you've read your share of favorite series books, too!
