As a Reading teacher working with middle school students, we are continually using fiction text as a "Read Aloud" with students following along in their own book as we read a given book together. With the vast majority of my students being kids of color and many from other countries, this book speaks to the challenges of growing up in the constant battle with whiteness. We will be examining South Africa's journey with apartheid in comparison to the U.S.'s struggle with race. Mr. Noah's stories bring this to life so eloquently with humor, grace and grassroots wisdom. Students will be using a "Reading Response Journal" as a record of their thoughts, reactions and questions as we progress through Mr. Noah's book. Students will also be viewing and engaging with Mr. Noah's television work and how he uses language to empower and educate with multiple points of view on a given topic. Upon completion of the book, students will complete a "One Pager" where they demonstrate their understanding of the book and what resonated most to them with a quote, a visual image (drawn or cut-out), a personal statement, and a question or two accompanied with an appropriate and reasonable answer.
