After reading an extensive amount of research, I am confident in saying that play-based learning will not only support a positive academic learning environment but will also support the learning of soft skills that some less fortunate children are not properly exposed to or taught. The materials being requested will allow for my young learners to use & explore their executive function skills such as problem-solving, organizing, sequencing, conflict resolution, decision-making, and reasoning. It is my goal to incorporate literacy, math, science & social studies into the dramatic play area themes as well as our new social/emotional curriculum themes. I will create standard-based themes that will require me switch out materials on a regular basis. Some of the themes include apple orchard, vet clinic, grocery store, construction site, etc. All of these themes allow for me to teach my required kindergarten standards in many different ways to meet the needs of each student. This will be a positive change in my teaching style and the learning styles that the students will be exposed to.
