Afte many years of collaborating and co-treating with occupational therapists it is clear that a child's availability for learning is highly dependent on their emotional and sensory state of regulation. Our goal is to create a space for the students of DMS that they can use to maximize their ability to access their education in the academic and social world. By funding these materials, ball chairs, a soft rocker, a medium pea pod, sensory body socks, and pillows, students will have a room to use as part of built in breaks, as a warm-up prior to initiating a lesson, or a break from their academic instruction. Moreover, it will be used as a place to regroup when needed. As we know, emotional regulation is an integral part of success beyond the school walls and having a calming environment to do so can foster the use of coping strategies.
