This selection of high-interest dystopian novels will be available to sophomore students so they can choose a book that calls to them. As we read, students will keep journals in their notebooks to capture how writers craft settings and create complex characters. They will examine symbolism. They will track their thinking to prepare for weekly formal book club discussions that center on essential questions of power. To close out our book clubs, students will craft digital dystopian flash fiction pieces, employing the content knowledge and craft skills they've developed through their novel study to create a vision of a (if we are not careful) possible future world. These complicated dystopian novels provide engaging stories where something has broken down, been lost, fallen to ruin, leaving the characters to ask: how do I survive this world I have inherited? This is an emotional reality adolescent scholars can identify with, grow deeply engaged with. Obtaining these titles through the generosity of donors would make these dystopian book clubs possible.
