Our district mission statement is to "inspire innovative and engaging learning." At Rowan-Salisbury schools we believe that every child should receive an engaging, well-rounded education with a focus on the development of academic skills, interpersonal skills, and unique life goals. The implementation of this plan begins with creating a student-centered learning environment. Research indicates that classroom design matters by empowering students through choices in their learning environment. Allowing students to feel comfortable promotes learning as well as academic engagement and collaboration. Students of all abilities are in the regular classroom but not all students learn in a regular desk or chair. Allowing students the freedom to choose between a standing desk and a table could be the difference in the ability to focus on instruction instead of sleeping through class. Giving students the ability to rock in a chair or sit on a crate in the floor will give students the power they need to engage in the curriculum. Creating a comfy reading space will provide students the necessary environment to promote and encourage independent reading. Creating specifically designed collaboration and exploration areas within the classroom will promote peer engagement as well as academic engagement. Students need choice to learn. Please consider helping me create a warm and inviting space that will assist my students in obtaining academic and interpersonal success within the classroom.
