Each student comes with a variety of different learning styles and needs. Some students need help learning how to effectively handle their emotions. There are many different ways to teach children how to recognize how they are feeling and how to positively handle their emotions. It is my goal as a teacher to create a safe, calm space for my students. This space will have sensory items and strategies to help them cool down. Some examples are breathing techniques, counting down, sensory toys, etc. In this space, there will be a weighted stuffed animal to help the students feel safe. This type of item almost makes the child feel as if they are being given a hug. There are also timers, fidget toys and books about feelings. I feel that all these items will help the students know that their feelings are valid, as well as teach them coping skills.
