Fifth grade is a tipping point in a student's life. This is usually their last year of Elementary school before graduation on to Junior High. At my school, the Junior High students have the opportunity to choose an elective class. Some of these include band, choir, and guitar. In order for my fifth grade students to feel confident in choosing a band or guitar class, they need to have time to experiment with different instruments. My goal for my fifth graders is to introduce them to the ukulele, so that they can be more confident when first holding a guitar. Giving them the opportunity to play a similar instrument will peak their interest in choosing a guitar class in Junior High. This is a fun and easy instrument to pick up and learn. The students will have a blast learning popular songs as well as technical skills that can easily be transferred to guitar. In my class we will learn how to play simple melodies as well as chords. The students will have fun practicing hand-eye coordination, playing as a group, learning how to take care of an instrument, reading chord charts / melodies, and performance skills.
