These materials will help my students organize their personal items to better enable them to understand the importance of taking care of their belongings. Often, when my students enter my room, they drop their backpacks on the floor. Providing them with their own space to hold their items will instill pride of ownership and a desire to take better care of their belongings. They will have a specific place to put their items each day so it will become a part of their routine. A large portion of my students come from homes of low socioeconomic status and may not have a place of their own at home to read or do other activities. I strive to give them a classroom environment that fosters a welcoming and nonjudgmental climate where they feel supported and encouraged to learn and do their best work. The shelves will hold book baskets in our library corner so students will be able to browse through books more easily. Many of my students are lower level readers. Storing the books with the covers facing forward allows students to view the picture and gain a better understanding of what the book is about rather than if they were only seeing the title on the spine of the book. The bean bag chairs will provide students a comfortable flexible seating option to read books, study for tests, and work in groups or individually on Chromebooks or other assigned tasks.
